Student Background

Student D came to EK Outreach Services in an extremely fragile mental state. Isolated from friendships and grieving the death of their father, their self-esteem was extremely low, with related anxiety. They were extremely concerned that they would never pass their GCSEs or ever attend college and become a nurse. Previous educational provisions had been able to engage them for long periods.

Student D’s EKOS experience

Whilst at EK Outreach, Student D studied Media Studies, English Language, Maths, History and Science. The expert teaching and mentoring support at EKOS, where staff worked hard to fill the gaps with the aim of enabling them to obtain their GCSEs, helped Student D to manage their anxiety and fragile mental state. Due to EK Outreach interventions, including introducing a mentor, Student D was better able to manage their exam worries and was able to put this into practice outside of lessons. Our mentor worked tirelessly with the family, to support Student D and act as vital support during the run up to their exams. Our EK Outreach coordinator also encouraged them to break the cycle of cancelling lessons, by offering ‘flexible structured boundaries’, including continuing with online lessons.

Achievements

Despite a challenging 18 months where flexibility was they key and with the support of their team, including their mentor and coordinators, Student C achieved GCSE’s in the following:

Biology GCSE – 4
History GCSE – 5
Maths GCSE 3
EPQ in English to a Distinction

They have been able to transition to a 6th form college to continue their progression, a major achievement.
