Student Background

Student C has ASC and was initially referred to us as they were displaying a series of challenging behaviours. They did not feel understood in their former education and found both the setting  peers unsupportive. Typically, they were masking their ASC. When they first came to EK Outreach, they were lacking in self-esteem and had been kept back a year. At 19 they were petrified that they would be another year later in achieving their dream of becoming a journalist.

Student C’s EKOS experience

Student C was placed with EK Outreach with just two full terms in order to prepare and complete their A Levels in History, R.S. and English Language. There were gaps in their learning to be filled and the challenges they faced with organisation and understanding to be overcome. Student C experienced  motivational challenges and examination fear. EK Outreach arranged for them to meet with a journalist (from the BBC World Service) which re-ignited their motivation for becoming a travel journalist. They were supported fully through the UCAS application and transition to living away from home, into their first 6 weeks of university and gained a friendship group.

Achievements

Student C gained A Levels in:
History – C
Religious studies- D
English Language – C.

These grades enabled them to gain the place in university they hoped for, to go on to study Journalism during which they will have a study year abroad.
