Student Background

Student E has anxiety and dyslexia. Previous tuition services had been unable to engage with them. When the initial home visit was undertaken, they were so anxious that they hid in the corner of the room behind their mother and they were unable to leave the house due to being anxious.

Student E’s EKOS experience

When staff started the home tuition, Student E hid in the larder for weeks and  communicated by passing notes under the door. The mentor that was assigned to Student E was instrumental in building trust, and worked on techniques for them to feel safe. Within 3 weeks of tuition Student E opened the front door to let staff in and began to build a face to face relationship with their team.

Achievements:

Once baseline assessments were completed it was decided that Student E was able to sit his GCSE’s. Student E obtained the following results in their first year with EK Outreach:

Art GCSE – 9
Science Trilogy Higher Paper – 5/5
Functional Skills Level 2 – Pass in English

Student E’s parents report Student E is so much happier and could not be more proud of their own progress. Since working with their mentor on life skills and preparation for adulthood, Student E is able to walk around the house, leave the house, and be more sociable with people. Student E is much more confident and has the ability to communicate their needs. They have transitioned into a sixth form college and is studying A level Art and completing his GCSE English Language.
