Humanities is an umbrella term that refers to those subjects which are concerned largely with humans; more specifically delving deep into culture, and how people express themselves within society.

As a result, students will encounter a broad spectrum of material if they decide to study a Humanities subject at GCSE level:

  • History – GCSE History requires them to think critically and analyse past events, and their connection to the modern-day world. Students will learn about how people used to live, and what lessons we can learn from past mistakes or breakthroughs.
  • Geography – It is a subject for those fascinated with the physical environment and our interaction with it. If they are curious about how natural landscapes are formed, and the reasons behind worrying phenomena such as global warming, then they should consider a GCSE in Geography.
  • Religious Studies – Religious Education provides a detailed examination of various religious traditions and schools, giving students a broad knowledge of religions around the world.
  • PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education) – It is a planned program to help students to develop fully as individuals and as members of families and social and economic communities. Its goal is to equip them with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, and practical skills to live healthily, safely, productively, and responsibly.
  • Sociology – This includes in-depth studies of the family unit, crime, and education in society. It’s a great subject to study if they are interested in people’s motivations within society, and what the glue is that holds it all together.
  • Citizenship – Citizenship is focused on democracy, law, and how government operates. This will be especially interesting to anyone who’s pondered a career as a civil servant or lawyer or is simply interested in what those occupations entail and how all the branches of government work.
  • Psychology – GCSE Psychology offers an engaging and effective introduction to psychology with fresh and modern content. Students will learn the fundamentals of the subject and have the opportunity to learn how to analyse arguments and evidence, test hypotheses, and make informed judgements, all of which are skills valued by higher education institutions and employers.
  • Philosophy and Ethics – It would allow students to discover the subject as a centuries-long conversation amongst the world’s deepest minds. Engagement with the rich history of philosophical thought contributes to personal growth and ethical development.

There are so many real-world examples used in each of these Humanities subjects, so students will be able to analyse events with a critical eye, and build skills which can help them understand people better going forward.
